Dijon has many famous buildings and monuments, some of which date back to the 14th century. Overlooking the central square, known as Place de la Libération, the buildings of the Palais des Ducs et des États de Bourgogne, or Palace of the Dukes and the States of Burgundy, were rebuilt, with one or two exceptions, in the 17th and 18th centuries. Nevertheless, the eastern wing of the Palace houses the Musée des Beaux-Arts, or Museum of Fine Arts, which is one of the outstanding collections of its kind in France.

Dijon is a gateway to some of the greatest vineyards in the world and the so-called Dijon Circle is an 80-mile circular route through some of the most famous, including Gevrey-Chambertin and Nuits-St-Georges. The route also takes in the Château de Commarin, first mentioned in a document in 1214, and considered one of the most beautiful buildings of its kind in the region. Speaking of Châteaux, the Château de Guédelon, or Guédelon Castle, in Treigny, in north-western Burgundy, is being built using only materials and techniques available 800 years ago and has become a popular tourist attraction.

Parking and Traffic Information in Dijon

Parking, some of which is free, is readily available in Dijon, although free parking, such as that at on Cours du Général de Gaulle, is typically 20 minutes' walk, or further, away from the city centre. The underground car parks closer to the city centre, such as those on Boulevard de la Trémouille and Place Grangier, understandably charge for parking, but not astronomically, and are larger and more convenient than their free-of-charge counterparts. Rush hour congestion, morning and evening, can be a problem in and around Dijon, as it can in most cities, so try to time your arrival or departure accordingly and remember to allow extra time if you need to travel at peak times.
